Color Palette: White

The color of the beginning. The color of simplicity. The color of sincerity.

White is probably the most talked about color. From poems to paintings, white is found at the center of many subjects. It’s strange how something as simple as a color can be so constant throughout history.

Milk. Paper. Bone. Cotton. White tones surround our lives like if they were the earth itself. White is the reflection of all light waves. Like the greatest giver in the universe, it holds nothing back. It can be seen as the purest gift, the humbleness of death, and the absence of chaos. There’s a peacefulness to it, yet, here’s one of the strangest things about white: it can mean the exact opposite.

A stain on a shirt. Scuff marks on new sneakers. Yellowing teeth. While white can invoke a certain calmness and familiarity, it can bring so much anxiety. More often than not, we are content with having any other color be tinted or faded. However, when it comes to white, we can’t tolerate any changes. Some of us are so anxious to keep things white. Pure white. Are we worried that having visual changes to pure white diminishes the integrity and professionalism of things? Maybe it’s simpler than that. Is it the desire of feeling that you have something new? Is it the fear of aging? There’s no universal answer for such a universal color.

White is both nothing and everything at the same time. While culture may sway our views, each one of us has our own stories and impressions of colors. What does white mean to you?
